Arty Starr

Author of Idea Flow, Founder, FlowInsight

Arty Starr is a recognized Flow Experience expert, researcher, speaker and thought leader, and author of Idea Flow, how to measure the friction in software development. Arty's PhD research is developing a theory of momentum in software development, and she is creator of the FLOWS platform designed to help developers thrive and find joy through more time in the flow state. The company she founded, FlowInsight, is on a mission to bring back joy to our everyday work.

Arty is also a 2D/3D animator and artist, and has spent the last couple years building 3D apps in AR. She loves to share about her experiences with these technologies.

What if developers had tools that recorded and helped them explore their historical experiences with the code, and they could identify hotspots of team friction, worthy of discussion, based on empirical data? This talk will explore the possibility and impact of such tools through a design fiction and working prototype of an Augmented Reality (AR) Code Planetarium powered by FlowInsight developer tools.

In an Agile software development process, a software team will typically meet on a regular basis in a “retrospective meeting” to reflect on the challenges faced by the team and opportunities for improvement. On the surface, this challenge might seem straightforward, but modern software projects are complex endeavors, and developers are human – identifying what’s most important in a complex sociotechnical system is a task humans struggle to do well.

As a PhD student, Arty took on a directed studies to learn how to bring her 3D animated character, fervie, into an interactive context to run and jump around in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment with a game controller. Join her as she shares her journey in learning, challenges faced, lessons learned, and a demo of her final project, Learning with Fervie.

If you've ever been interested in building applications for AR/VR space, or working at the intersection of art + coding, Arty will be sharing her journey in learning this space over the last few years. With lots of fun examples, and a proposal for a standard platform for building 3D apps for software engineering, you'll learn about the capabilities of what's possible in this space with new inspiring ideas for building fresh and innovative applications.
